Abstract Summary
• The feasibility of a new type of horizontal ground heat exchanger (Coil-Column System, (CCS)) was evaluated and compared with the straight-line and spiral-coil types through the heat exchange performance and economic aspects. • A numerical model was used to simulate the heat transfer process of 80 case studies. This model was validated using an indoor-thermal response test. • Although the construction cost of CCS is significantly higher than that of the straight-line and spiral-coil types, its high heat exchange performance results in a shorter payback period and higher internal rate of return.
